What I Do the Day After a Choir Concertš
So, letās talk about the day after a concert. I know Iāll be mentally and physically exhausted so I like to follow the same routine each time to make my life easier!
1-Choir Concert Reflection Critique
I learned early on in my teaching career that students will focus on the negative things if I donāt steer the conversation in the right direction. So before we have any verbal discussion of the concert, I ask students to privately fill out a concert critique/survey. I use it as a bell ringer with students picking it up as they walk in. I like to focus on the positives with a little discussion of what could be improved next time. Iāve found that students will be honest if I ask them to put it in writing. When everyone is finished, I lead the class in a very SHORT discussion, sometimes only calling on 3 people per question. Then, I collect the forms and grade for writing in complete sentences and fully answering the questions.

2-Collect Concert Music
I put my choir librarian/choir officers in charge of collecting the music. We pass in one song at a time. Pro tip: Ask everyone to hold up each piece of music as you collect so you can visually see who does not have it. Then, I list the names of those without their music on the board. Sometimes, we make it a competition between sections or row. āWho can pass in their music the quickest in the neatest pile?ā āWhich row can do this completely silent?ā
3- Choir Clean Up Time!
Let the students help! If I am organized, I have a list of clean up tasks and assign every student a job. Here are a few of the jobs Iāve given students before:
Organize and distribute new concert music in folder slots.
Organize each piece of music in numerical order.
Sharpen pencils.
Check Choir robes/uniforms.
4-Play a Singing Game!
The day after a concert is a great time to incorporate team building into the choir classroom. My students love to play games and these are two of their favorites! Divide up your class and have some fun!
