🎶Top 10 Essential Tips for New Choir Teachers (and Reminders for Experienced Teachers, too!)🎤

Starting your journey as a choir teacher can be both exciting and overwhelming. With 20 years of experience, I've mentored many new teachers and have seen firsthand the challenges and successes you will encounter. College can only prepare you for so much but real understanding comes from being in the classroom

Here are my top 10 tips to help you navigate your first year (and beyond). Experienced teachers, don't stop reading! We all need reminders from time to time. 😉

1. Befriend an Experienced Teacher 🏫

Find an experienced teacher in your building, even if they don't teach the same subject. My teacher besties are high school English and middle school Special Ed teachers. Their advice and friendship has been invaluable. Remember, you don't have to go through this alone. Many experienced educators are more than happy to help you succeed.

2. Write a To-Do List 📝

Keep a to-do list, but accept that you'll never finish everything on it. I use the notes app on my phone, but when I was student teaching, my mentor suggested keeping a notepad by my bed. If something is keeping you up at night, write it down and get back to sleep.

3. Make Extra Copies 📄

Always make 10-20 more copies of newsletters, permission slips, and handouts than you think you'll need. Seriously, where do they disappear to?!?!

4. The Golden Rule for Replying to Angry Emails 📧

Less is more. Never reply immediately to an angry email. Give yourself time to cool down and reflect on your response. If you're unsure how to reply, ask your experienced teacher friend. (See #1) Remember to reply within 24 hours during the workweek.

5. Handle Upset Parents with Care 🛡️

If an upset parent wants to speak with you, don’t hesitate to ask for an administrator to be present. Principals are there to support you and manage difficult interactions.

6. “No School Saturdays” Saved My Sanity 🛀

Dedicate at least one day a week to completely disconnect from school. No lesson plans, no checking emails—nothing school-related. If you have events on Saturdays, make Sunday your day off. When you have a full weekend of events, set a "No School after 6:00 pm" rule. This will help you recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

7. Reflect on Your Day 📅

Healthy reflection on your day will make you a better teacher. I learned that no two choirs are the same. What works for one might not work for another. At the end of each day, note what went well and what didn't. This practice will help you improve year after year.

8. Enjoy a Non-Musical Hobby 🎨

Find a hobby outside of music to enjoy at least once a week. Whether it’s a fitness class, a coffee date with friends, a date night, or a book club—make time for yourself.

9. Learn to Say "No, Thank You" 🚫

As a music teacher, you might be asked to take on extra roles, like directing church choirs or giving private music lessons. It's okay to say no. Prioritize your time and well-being.

10. Embrace the Unknown 💡

You won't have all the answers, and that's perfectly fine. We're fortunate to teach a subject we love. Find joy in teaching choir, have fun with your students, and remember to laugh every day!

You've got this! Happy Singing! 🎶
