Easy Choir Games for a Rainy Day โ˜”๐ŸŽค

This week, we have 5 WHOLE DAYS OF SCHOOLโ€ฆin a row! Iโ€™m not sure Iโ€™m ready for it and I know my students will need some extra motivation this week. Even though we have a concert in a week and a half, I have planned our concert preparation so that we always schedule in time for a little fun. I know that my students work better for me if they know that a brain break game is just around the corner.

Incorporating games is a great way to add the fun to rehearsals and build a positive classroom environment. Check out these easy games to incorporate into your Middle School or High School Choir Classroom today!

๐ŸŒŸPass the Beat Around the Room

This game was a hit during COVID teaching and is easy to incorporate the last 10 minutes of class. The objective of Pass The Beat is to keep the rhythm going around the circle without missing a beat. Have your students form a circle. Choose a student to start. The teacher will clap or snap the steady beat. One by one, students will speak one beat/syllable of the phrase, โ€œPass the beat around the room (clap)โ€. For example, on the first beat the first student says โ€˜passโ€™. On the second beat, the next student says โ€˜theโ€™ and so on around the circle.  If a student misses the beat they are out. The final student standing is the winner. As your students grow more confident, increase or vary the speed of the beat to make the game more challenging. You can also take away words and add claps/stomps in its place.

๐ŸŽถBeachball Scales or Song

This one is simple: Buy a beach ball, toss it to the choir and tell the students they must sing one note at a time each time the beach ball is hit into the air. For example, if your choir is practicing scales, the choir sings each note of the scale up and down each time the ball is hit into the air. Try it with your concert songs for fun, too!

๐ŸŽ‰Free YouTube Music Trivia Quizzes

Looking for a fun Friday or a day after the concert activity? YouTube has a treasure trove of trivia and guess the song quizzes. And they are free! (Pro tip: Always screen videos before showing your class. The following three examples below are clean and appropriate for middle school age and up.)

๐ŸŒŸChoir Charades

If you havenโ€™t already downloaded my free Choir Charades Game, click here! Choir Charades is the perfect twist on an old standard. Divide your choir into "This Team" and "That Team," and let the musical charades begin!  A player draws a card and with 60 seconds on the clock, acts out the motions without talking or lip-syncing. The team must guess the lyrics, singing only the words. If you're ready to crank up the excitement, I've got variations galore for you! Click this link to access the free game and turn your rehearsals into a musical celebration.

๐ŸŽถChoir Member Trivia

Ask each student to submit a question/answer about themselves or random music trivia. You could also include questions about your current/past choir songs. Compile questions into a presentation for the class. For an added variation, students could submit โ€œ2 Truths and a Lieโ€ about themselves.

๐ŸŽ‰Choir Karaoke

Ask students to submit their favorite (school appropriate) karaoke song (with a YouTube link) ahead of time so you can check lyrics for appropriateness. You could plan an entire day or do one/two karaoke songs a day at the end of class.

๐ŸŒŸChoir Olympics

Organize teams to compete in musical challenges, such as highest/lowest note competitions or rhythm relay races. Award points to teams based on their performance in each challenge, and crown the winning team at the end. (If you want to save time, check out my Music Olympics on TPT!)

๐ŸŽถLyric Scramble

Take lyrics from a familiar song and scramble the words. Divide students into teams and give each team a set of scrambled lyrics. The first team to unscramble the lyrics correctly and sing them aloud wins.

Adding games to your classroom creates an atmosphere of fun and makes students excited to be in your choir! Add some fun today!
