🎶Choir Concert Etiquette 101: Simple Ways to Train Students for Success
Concert days are some of the most exciting days to be in choir! They're a chance for students to show off the effort and dedication they've put in. But just as with rehearsing notes and rhythms, knowing concert etiquette is a skill that needs to be learned. For many students, especially those new to choir, this might be their first experience with a formal music concert setting.
By teaching simple, respectful concert etiquette rules, we not only help students feel more confident on stage but also create a smoother experience for everyone—audience included. With a little guidance, your students can spend concert day prepared and proud, making the event more enjoyable and rewarding for all involved! 🎶
Here are some simple ways to help your choir develop strong stage etiquette habits:
1. ⭐Rehearse Stage Presence Early and Often
Practice walking on and off the stage silently in class.
Remind students to keep talking to a minimum once they’re in performance spaces (like backstage or on stage).
Use a mock performance day to teach them how to stand still between songs, smile, and stay engaged—even when they aren't singing.
2. ⭐Teach “Concert Behavior” During Rehearsals
No Fidgeting: Play a "freeze challenge" game where students must stay still and focused for a set period of time.
Model Applause Timing: Practice when to clap during another group’s performance—after a piece ends, not in the middle! Use fun cues like saying, “When you see my hands come down, that’s your sign to clap.” Explain the difference between clapping at a music concert vs. a basketball game.
Etiquette Charades 🎭Have students act out good and bad concert behaviors in a fun charades game. For example, one student can pretend to talk loudly during a performance, and the others must guess what they’re doing wrong.
3. ⭐Teach Polite Bowing
Bowing is a skill, and it should be practiced! Walk students through the steps of taking a bow together at the end of the concert or after a song to show appreciation for the audience.
Bonus Tip: Use the “Up-2-3, Down-2-3 Rule”. Prep the bow by standing on your tiptoes for “Up-2-3” and bowing on "Down-2-3".
4. ⭐Choir Concert Etiquette: Do's and Don'ts
DOs:
Be On Time 🎶 – Arrive early and be ready to perform. Being on time shows respect for the audience and your fellow performers.
Stay Focused on the Conductor 👀 – Keep your eyes on the conductor, especially during transitions or tempo changes.
Stand with Good Posture 📏 – Stand tall to help with breathing and vocal projection. It also makes the whole choir look more professional and confident.
Listen to Each Other 👂 – Blend with your section and the whole choir, adjusting your volume as needed. Be careful to not get too excited at a concert and sing too loudly.
Smile and Engage 😊 – Show your enjoyment of the music! It’s part of giving the audience a great experience.
Hold Applause Positively 👏 – After each piece, stand still and keep a pleasant expression while the audience applauds.
Exit Quietly 🚶♂️ – After the performance, leave the stage calmly and quietly.
DON’Ts:
Don’t Talk on Stage 🚫🗣️ – Avoid chatting or whispering during the performance, especially in between songs. It distracts the audience and other choir members.
No Gum or Food on Stage 🍬 – No chewing gum during the concert; not only does it look unprofessional but it poses a choking hazard.
Avoid Unnecessary Movements ✋ – Don’t unnecessarily sway, fidget, or look around during the performance. Stay focused on the music.
No Phones or Other Devices 📱 – Keep all devices off and leave them a trusted family member or friend. They do not belong on stage, even in your pocket.
Don’t Over-sing🎙️ – Even the most well meaning student can get a little too excited on stage. Be aware of your singing volume and listen to those around you.
Avoid Touching Your Face or Hair 🙅♀️ – These movements draw attention away from the music and can be distracting for the audience.
Don’t Forget to Be Gracious 🌟 – Always be respectful, even if things don’t go perfectly. Enjoy the experience and thank the audience with a smile!
Teaching concert etiquette doesn’t have to be complicated. A few quick lessons during rehearsal, combined with friendly reminders, can transform your concert into a memorable, positive experience! 🎶
Happy singing (and performing)! 🎤
