⏰🏫🎵 Music In Our Schools Month: Top 7 Choir Ideas!

March is Music in Our Schools Month (MIOSM) and it is the perfect opportunity to highlight the importance of music education and showcase the talents of your choir students! Whether you teach middle school or high school choir, there are plenty of ways to engage students, spread awareness, and celebrate the power of music. Here are some creative ways to promote MIOSM!

1. Choir Spirit Days 🎵

Dedicate a week to fun, music-themed dress-up days to build excitement and school-wide participation. Here are some themed day ideas:

🎤 Monday – Music Concert Tee Day
Wear a t-shirt from your favorite band, artist, or concert!

🎶 Tuesday – Song Title Day
Dress up as a literal interpretation of a song title (e.g., wear all yellow for Here Comes the Sun, or dress in cowboy attire for Old Town Road).

🎭 Wednesday – Broadway & Movie Musical Day
Dress as a character from a Broadway show or a famous movie musical like The Lion King, Hamilton, The Sound of Music, or The Greatest Showman!

🎧 Thursday – Throwback Music Day
Wear an outfit inspired by a past decade’s music trends (’50s rock ‘n’ roll, ’70s disco, ’90s grunge, etc.).

Friday – School Spirit & Music Pride Day
Show your school spirit by wearing choir, band, or school colors, and add a fun musical accessory!

Encourage students and staff to participate and make it even more fun with a friendly competition or prizes for best-dressed!

2. Social Media Takeover 📢

Let your students help spread the word about choir and MIOSM through your school’s social media! Assign different students or choir sections to create short videos, posts, or stories throughout the month. Content ideas include:

  • Student testimonials about why choir matters to them.

  • Behind-the-scenes clips of rehearsals and performances.

  • Quick vocal warm-ups or musical challenges for followers to try.

  • Fun “duet challenges” where students sing with a friend or teacher.

  • A “day in the life” of a choir student.

Encourage students to use hashtags like #MusicInOurSchools and #WhyISing to connect with a broader audience.

3. Music Trivia Challenge

Keep the excitement going with a daily or weekly music trivia challenge! Share a question during morning announcements, in class, or on social media, and let students submit answers. Here are some question ideas:

  • Which composer wrote “Ode to Joy”?

  • What was the first music video played on MTV?

  • Name three musicals written by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

  • What is the highest voice type in a choir?

Reward winners with small prizes like candy, stickers, or “front row at the next concert” privileges!

4. Musician of the Day 🎶🎤

Feature an influential musician, composer, or music educator each day with a short bio shared in the school announcements or posted around the school. Highlight a diverse range of artists, from classical composers to modern-day singers. Some examples:

  • Ella Fitzgerald – The “First Lady of Song” and jazz legend.

  • John Williams – Composer of some of the most famous movie scores.

  • Lin-Manuel Miranda – Creator of Hamilton and advocate for music education.

  • Aretha Franklin – The Queen of Soul and a civil rights activist.

You can also tie the musician of the day into classroom activities by playing their music or discussing their impact.

Check out The Choir Queen’s “Famous People Who Were in Choir”. I’m going to hang these posters outside of my classroom to promote the choir this month!

5. “Why I Sing” Wall 🎤

Create an interactive display where students write down why they love choir and post it on a large bulletin board or wall. Provide colorful sticky notes or paper for responses. Prompts could include:

  • “I sing because…”

  • “Choir makes me feel…”

  • “My favorite thing about choir is…”

Encourage students, teachers, and even administrators to contribute. This is a great visual reminder of the impact music has on students’ lives!

6. Singing Telegrams🎵

Let students send fun musical messages to friends or staff members! Here’s how to organize it:

  • Song Options: Keep it short and sweet! A few fun options:

    • You’ve Got a Friend in Me

    • Lean on Me

    • Build Me Up Buttercup

  • Logistics:

    • Set up a request system via Google Forms or paper submissions.

    • Have small groups or soloists deliver telegrams during passing periods or lunchtime.

    • Charge a small fee as a choir fundraiser if desired.

This is a fun way to spread positivity and showcase student voices!

7. Community Performances

Take your choir beyond the school walls and into the community to spread the joy of music! Consider these ideas:

  • Local Businesses: Perform at a coffee shop, mall, or bookstore.

  • Senior Centers: Bring joy to older adults with a themed performance.

  • Elementary Schools: Inspire younger students with a fun, interactive concert.

  • Sports Events: Sing the national anthem or a halftime performance at a game.

  • Pop-Up Performances: Surprise people with a flash mob performance in a public space!

Community performances not only give students valuable experience but also help advocate for the importance of music education.
